Before buying It isimportant to ask!

When choosing a soft modular playground supplier review thishelpful checklist of quality, safety and durability controls to ensure thatyour supplier meets or exceeds these crucial commitments to you and yourproject. When it comes to child safety and your responsibility good, ok or 2ndbest simply isn’t good enough. Due diligence will let you and your staff sleepat night knowing that you have made the right choice.

Insurance

Does the manufacturer/supplier have adequate liabilityinsurance that is capable of handling any minor or major claim? Even if theequipment or project may not be at fault you are obligated to defend any claimsmade at your facility. Do they have adequate Workers’ Compensation andEmployer’s Liability insurance coverage (“WC&EL”) for at site installationsduring the build out?

We currently carry liability insurance coverage of$5,000,000 with Lloyds of London, an international insurance provider. Uponrequest, we can provide copies of our insurance coverage as well as the contactinformation for our insurance broker who is available to answer any questionsthat you may have. Our manufacturing and installation personnel are covered byappropriate WC&EL insurance. Proofof this coverage is generally required by local city officials when obtainingvarious installation permits, as applicable.

· Ask ourCompetitors:
Be sure to ask for a copy of their liability and WC&EL insurance policies,as well as the contact information of their insurance brokers to verify thatthe policies are currently effective and are in good standing.

Materials Specifications

Does the manufacturer/supplier produce the playgroundlocally and provide adequate safety standards, fire spread ratings, andtoxicity levels testing as required on all raw materials in order to meet localand international standards?

Once we process your order, we will provide to you productsafety information on the materials used for your order. This valuableinformation can be used by fire officials and other authorities so that theburden of proof does not rest with you when officials request this information.Our products meet international standards and have even been tested byinternational laboratories, including very stringent French standards forquality assurance. Product safety testing is a significant investment which wewillingly undertake in order to provide our customers with long termpeace-of-mind.

· Ask ourCompetitors: Request fire and safetyinformation to ensure that the supplier’s materials meet required safety standards.

· Engineered specification availability: Do theproducts meet engineering requirements for public use in both small and largerplay structures?

For those play structures that require engineeringcertification (i.e. for earthquake and other requirements), we deal withreputable independent firms. Pricing for engineer certification can be quotedseparately, if required for your project.

· Ask ourCompetitors: Inquire if they have experience in dealing with engineeringfirms for their play structures and if they have experience with firms that cancertify to local requirements. Certain states, provinces and countries requirespecific engineering certifications, such as California due to earthquakebuilding codes. It is imperative that supporting documentation sent toengineers and government officials is complete and accurate, to avoid potentialliability.

· Does the supplier actually manufacture? Are theyable to provide adequate warranty, parts, and service?

International Play’s offices are comprised of over 40,000 sqfeet of manufacturing, testing, and retail development facilities. Ourmanufacturing plant includes design, detailing, artwork, theming, steelfabrication, woodworking, upholstery, framing, plastics, tooling, painting andfinishing departments as well as Robotic C.N.C milling machines. In addition toour R & D and Retail Development Facility, we have over $1 million ininventory and production equipment. Allthis capacity is available for production, refurbishing, upgrades of existing playgrounds,warranty, and service parts. We prideourselves on having the ability to move quickly on all of your new and existingplaygrounds, parts and services.

What about ourCompetitors?

Inquire where the playground is manufactured and whatwarranty, parts and services are available when you need them. Having to waiton parts and service can cost you time and money and increases the risk ofuntimely maintenance and repairs that may lead to safety issues whichultimately increases your liability risk.

What level of quality and durability does the supplier usein the playground and materials?

We use materials in our play structures that are produced tomeet or exceed North American standards for quality and durability. Someexamples include 36” diameter tube system for slides, climbs, and crawls thatallow easy access insuring safety for adults and staff to access and crawlanywhere needed and even two guests to pass within the same tube space. Inaddition our tubes are among the thickest walled in the industry with a minimumaverage thickness of 3/8 – 1/2 inch for strength and durability. Our fullyenclosed netted play frame features No-Climb netting attached to our steelframes with FRP (Fiber Glass Reinforced Polymers) rods and secured with numerous150lb test safety ties interlaced throughout the enclosures. The structure isthen finished with Tuff Coat™ padded pipe foam with matching safety ties thatoffer a safe, tidy and professional look that is also easily adjusted ifrequired.

Our Custom decks are fabricated with premium quality heavyduty vinyl and use closed cell memory foam. All of our structures use only ourexclusive IPC clamps for rigidity and durability not tie wraps which arecommonly used by the majority of the competition.

Some of the materials we use are made exclusively for us andare therefore not offered by anyone else which is just one more reason why ourequipment has become recognized worldwide for its quality and durability.

Before buying It isimportant to ask!

Always take the time to do your homework, always ask forsamples of materials and inquire about installation finishes and techniques toensure that you are getting an “Apples to Apples” comparison. Request samples of installations that havebeen around for over 5 years to get comfortable with the quality and thedurability of playgrounds provided by these suppliers.

Industry Standards

Does the supplier meet local and international standards forthe playground industry?

We meet or exceed industry safety guidelines and standardssuch as ASTM, CSA/CPRA (we have certified CPRA inspectors in house), ROSPA,TUV, and French standards. As mentioned above, we submit our materials forrigorous testing by UL certified labs so we know what is in what we sell.

We are one of very few companies that actually build toengineered specifications and have real world experience with larger structuresthat require engineering certifications.

· Ask OurCompetitors: Inquire aboutmanufacturing standards and request product safety information to ensure thatlocal and national standards can be met.

· Industryexperience: What experience does the supplier have? How long have they beenin business?

As the name implies this award winningplay area was designed with the Bubble theme in mind. The main play frame hasvarious slides, a large ball pool, mini trampolines, tunnels, obstacle walks,cargo climbs, a climbing wall, monkey bars, sky bridges, moonwalks and a wholelot more! The entirely separate area fortoddlers and babies features a ball pool, a slide, soft foam elements, a step'n' slide and floor puzzles. The soft foam wall seating around the area letsadults be close enough to offer support while still allowing independence.

For the thirdstraight year TimeTwisters is recognised in UKPlay Centre Awards. TimeTwistersachieved 3rd Place in the UK Play Centre of the Year category in the PlayProviders Association ASPIRE AWARDS. While being recognised as one of the bestplay centres in the UK is quite an achievement, doing it three years in a rowis something to be proud of.

"During an online search I found A Gym Tale, at the time it was just a few doors away from our Pediatrician’s office. They had a program entitled “New Magic” for babies 3-10 months.

Three years on we have done MANY an organized playgroup with A Gym Tale, Stinky Monkey attended all levels of groups.… he’s finally reached the age where its time to just go and play in the pirate ship and castle. He’s even mastered the “Big” slide (the slide I won’t go down). Bella Bear started the classes at 2 months old and she has made her own friends now in her groups and enjoys every minute of the time in class and enjoys the under 3 play area when Stinky Monkey is enjoying the slides and larger structure."

Overall Assessment:
I had heard that the new Calgary Farmers’ Market location had a play area, but didn’t expect it to be anything like this. Rather than the collection of panels I had thought it would be, it is like a smaller version of an indoor play centre. Gordie had a great time. His favorite thing was climbing into the tractor on the 2nd level and peeking down at me. We went on a Thursday (btw it doesn’t open until 11 on Thursdays) and even then it was fairly busy. I would expect that will generally be the case over the summer. I’d recommend trying to eat before noon if you are there for lunch as it is a very popular location with the employees from the local businesses.
This is definitely a great place to take the kids if you are wanting to go to a farmer’s market or want to go to a food court with some choices that are different from the usual.

Innovation is Child’s Play Drives 25th Annual InterActivity Conference.

From May 19th- 21st, 2011, the global children’s museum community will converge on Houston, Texas, for the Association of Children’s Museums (ACM) InterActivity conference. Children’s Museum professionals are traveling from the United States, Canada, China, Jordan, Mexico, Quatar, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and United Kingdom to explore the vital role children’s museums have in building children’s 21st century skills and in connecting with audiences in new ways. The conference will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Houston and then there will be special evening events hosted at the Children’s Museum of Houston, the Heritage Society, and the Houston Zoo.

The InterActivity 2011 conference will be hosted locally by the Children’s Museum of Houston (CMH), which recently was named the #1 Children’s Museum in the country by Parents Magazine. The InterActivity 2011 conference features science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teaching strategies, tactics for extending exhibit inquiry via mobile devices and thoughts on promoting risk as a necessary experience for personal and institutional growth. The ultimate goal of the InterActivity 2011 conference is to provide children museum professionals with education and resources to take back to the children and families in their communities.

Almost two years ago Iplayco Inc. (International Play Company) added another page to its business plan. The manufacturer of children’s indoor and outdoor play structures for playgrounds, family entertainment centers (FECs), and other facilities took the unusual step and opened The Great Escape right down the road.

Its all-ages FEC features a wide range of rides and attractions, including laser tag, climbing walls, an indoor playground, a suspended obstacle course, and mini-bowling. (Iplayco, headquartered in Langley, Canada, integrates products other than its own here.)

While the facility turns a nice profit, that’s not the only reason the company built it, says Scott Forbes, the company’s president. In fact, The Great Escape (www.thege.ca) serves a couple different roles.

Iplayco (www.iplayco.com) uses the FEC for research and development purposes to see which of its products guests enjoy most, and maybe more important, it’s a training site for people considering opening a similar facility. Dozens of customers, some from as far away as Mexico and Europe, have visited The Great Escape to learn firsthand how to run an FEC.

Iplayco offers a vast turnkey service that covers the business plan, financing, operations, design, training, and marketing. “We take care of the whole thing,” Forbes says, adding the relationship could continue for questions that pop up after the doors open.

The real-world model proves to be a strong selling point, Forbes says. The Great Escape staff can show clients exactly how to run a successful birthday party, what are the best seating ratios and setup for traffic flow, and even offer numbers that they can use for banking and financing purposes.

“We can give them all the right answers,” he says. “Whatever you need from us—if you want a turnkey FEC, just some advice, or a playground, we are here for you.”

Creative Minds - Forbes admits he can’t draw a straight line. “The designers quite often laugh at my pencil sketches,” jokes the 44-year-old father of two boys.

Luckily, he didn’t require an art degree when he cofounded Iplayco Inc. in 1999 with partner Franco Aquila.

By mixing interactivity and theming as well as putting an equal importance on creativity and aesthetics, Iplayco has earned a loyal customer base, he says. Its products can be found in more than 60 countries around the world.

“We just try to take it the next level,” Forbes says.

Years ago, play structures were simple and straightforward: ball pits, slides, things like that, Forbes notes. The level of participation by the child was relatively low.

In founding Iplayco, he wanted to break away from the norm to provide a more rewarding experience for kids.

“Let’s create things that are good for the children to interact with and let their minds be creative,” he says, explaining the company’s philosophy. “That’s a big part of what we do, whether its theming, unique shapes, or play events.”

With one of its tree-climb attractions, for example, young guests climb from level to level, doing something along each step of way. It could be making a sound effect or wiggling the nose on the tree character’s “head.” Its latest series of play structures, called Quantum Curve, takes a nonstandard approach, he describes. Gone are the standard rigid lines and 90-degree angles.

“We put an interesting curvature to the equipment,” says Forbes, who recently built one such innovative structure at Kuwait’s 360 Mall. “It looks like a piece of architecture.”

Iplayco worked closely with the mall’s management to develop Infunity. “We try to take the customers’ needs and feedback and not be taken back by it,” he says. “This is a creative process. We start with something that looks like a truck and it ends up like a race car.”

Forbes also looks for “the story” a facility wants to tell. If it’s a fairy tale, he would work to create a structure that would blend in with that particular theme, like a castle in this case.

He attributes much of the success of Iplayco, which boasts 80 to 100 employees depending on the season, to its team of designers. They frequently participate in roundtable brainstorming discussions and even take Forbes’ rough doodles and turn them into polished finished products.

“We have created some pretty wonderful play environments for kids over the years,” he says proudly.

We would like to offer some helpful hints that may assist you in the planning and development of your playground project.

1. Location – The location of your facility is very important to the success of your business. We can offer you some advice concerning the location of your facility, however, it will ultimately be your responsibility to find a suitable location for your business. When selecting the location of the facility you should consider factors such as cost, accessibility, demographics, and local competition.

2. Facility - The size of the facility should be directly related to your business plan considering factors such as rental cost, expected capacity, and the equipment necessary to create a destination point. The facility should be large enough to accommodate the play area (including toddler area), birthday party rooms, seating area, food service, counters, and any additional amusement items you may require. We also recommend when selecting your facility you allow a minimum of 16 foot ceiling height to allow for more challenging play events such as multi- level slides and climbs.

3. Cost – During your planning stages we will provide you with some sample playgrounds and prices to assist you with your business plan. Once you have located and secured your facility we will complete a custom design for you and establish an exact cost of the play system. Services such as cash flow analysis, feasibility studies, and site inspections are also available upon request for a nominal fee that may be applied to the purchase of your IPC Play System.

4. Size and style of the play system - The size, style, and cost of the playground system will depend on the size of the facility, budget, age group and capacity. IPC is a custom manufacturer of soft playground equipment and once we have collected sufficient information about your project we will complete a custom playground design to suit your facility.

5. Design – There is a variety of options to choose from when designing a play system. Some options include the theme or concept, size and orientation, color and events, and level of interactivity. It is important in the design phase that we understand all of the details surrounding your project in order to offer you the best and most accurate play system design possible. We encourage communication and recommend that you discuss your project in detail with one of our playground specialists.

6. Construction and installation – Once you have secured your facility, finalized the design, and confirmed the purchase of your play system IPC will manufacture, deliver and install the system within a designated time frame. Our installation technician’s travel throughout the world to install our playgrounds under strict safety and quality controlled guidelines. We do not sub contract the manufacturing.

7. After sales support – Once the playground is installed and your business is operating we encourage our customers to maintain contact with our sales and servicing departments with any questions or concerns that they may have.
